Professor Kamal Bechkoum, Dean of the School of Applied Sciences

The University of Northampton School of Science and Technology is one of the world's leading specialist institutions for the study of leather and biomaterials technology, resource efficiency, vertical transportation technology and non-destructive testing.

We offer a wide range of university courses, from HNDs and degrees to postgraduate and professional qualifications. Our courses cover three main subject areas:

We are proud of our curriculum portfolio that has been tailored to meet the industry demand. Our students are taught in an innovative environment and are well equipped with the latest skills and knowledge to meet the changing technological environment.
For example:

  • all National Student Surveys have ranked our environmental science and geography programmes of study in the top 15 of all universities in the UK in terms of "overall course satisfaction
  • we are the Centre of Excellence for wastes management education, consultancy and research in the UK
  • our environmental courses have a strong emphasis on practical skills that employers demand, including laboratory techniques and field work, with options for overseas field courses
  • our non-destructive testing programmes are designed in partnership with the British Institute for Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT).
  • our engineering students are highly rated by employers
  • the University is investing in a multi-million Technology Realm, enabling our computing programmes to benefit from a state of the art facility in 3D visualisation and immersive technology

The Newton Building; home to the School of Science and TechnologyResearch in the School underpins curriculum development and is grounded in applied science, with a strong focus on business solutions and systems. Academic staff are engaged in a broad range of research activities and present their work regularly at national and international conferences, and publish in prestigious academic journals.

We have strong links with business, industry and the public sector working across a wide range of disciplines providing expert services in areas such as resource efficiency and implementation of environmental systems; materials testing and characterisation; monitoring in-service materials performance; high performance engineering; landscape ecology; and information and communication technologies.

We have more than 50 academic staff and over 20 technicians and administrative staff. You will find them knowledgeable, supportive and will make sure that you have an exciting and challenging experience with us!
