The School of Health has a wide portfolio of research activities placing emphasis on research and knowledge transfer in collaboration with local and national health and social care providers and businesses relating to those research activities. The School is both proactive and reactive in responding to local, regional and national agendas for research and welcomes inquiries from individuals or groups who would like to develop links through research and knowledge transfer or who would like to discuss possible research projects.
There are five research groups, all of which are engaged in applied health research.
The Biosciences Research Group
The Biosciences Research Group is engaged in research in the following topic areas:
- Survival mechanisms in food pathogens and food spoilage bacteria
- Molecular genetics of cardiovascular fitness
- The influence of maternal diet on the development of renal function in offspring
- Ethical, legal and social impact of new genetic technologies
The Health Through Occupation (HETOC) Research Group
The Health Through Occupation (HETOC) Research Group is lead by Dr Susan Corr a Reader in Occupational Science and is an interdisciplinary group with a research portfolio that spans both occupational therapy and occupational science.
The Nursing and Midwifery Research Group
The Nursing and Midwifery Research Group includes nurses and midwives from all professional backgrounds and is lead by Dr Jackie Parkes. This group has undertaken a number of commissioned research projects for local NHS trusts such as evaluations of professional roles and reviewing service organisation. There is also an emphasis on evaluation and research in nursing and midwifery education.
The Podiatry Research Group
The Podiatry Research Group is active in the areas of podiatric clinical practice and is part of a national RCT into the efficacy of treatments in verrucae.
The Sport & Exercise Research Group
The Sport and Exercise Research Group conducts sport and exercise related research in a range of disciplines including biomechanics and physiology, sports psychology and adapted physical activity

Post Doctorate Study
The School of Health is able to support post-graduate studies in a number of subject areas where we have research expertise. The School has an active postgraduate community of both full-time and part-time research students. Our part-time students are drawn from both local health trusts and industry. There is an active inter-disciplinary training programme for postgraduate research students and a research seminar programme. Students also have the opportunity to undertake research training workshops provided in collaboration with the Knowledge Exchange at The University of Northampton.
