Research Experience

As part of my Masters of Arts in Education degree course at the Open University, I carried out the following studies/projects as assignments /examinable components:

  • An investigation of difficulties encountered in critically analysing care by midwifery students.
  • Assessment policies for nursing and midwifery courses.
  • The role of the external examiner (Qualitative study)
  • The use of counselling skills as a mentoring strategy-A case study
  • Practitioner Action research into mentoring- developed a booklet for training of mentors for nurses. A qualitative study of the key factors that contribute to effective provision of an on programme educational guidance and counselling - the perception of student nurses.

Research activities undertaking or in progress as a senior lecturer are as follows

  • Journal club leader (Nursing and Midwifery -Februaryruary 2005-September 2005)– I encouraged working colleagues to engage in research activities including presentation and discussion of their research papers or other research papers as appropriate.
  • Evaluation of The Service User and Carer Involvement Strategy (completed 2006).
  • Educational research – ‘EBL’ enquiry based learning.
  • A reviewer for an international Journal known as Learning in Health and Social Care by Blackwell Publishing January 2005 –2006
  • A reviewer for an international nursing journal- Nursing Forum Since Novemberember 2006.
  • Co- editor and author of 4 chapters of a nursing textbook book entitled Vital notes for Nurses: Health Assessment. Published by Blackwell Publishing Limited in October 2005 (See references below) I was the lead editor and had to ensure that all ten chapters of the book were well written by appropriately qualified colleagues, edited, and correctly set in time for publication. I also drew a few of the diagrams using the computer software package for the book.
  • Completed research -An exploration of the needs and experiences of nursing and midwifery students in clinical practice and how best they could be supported (A poster on how best the students could be supported has also been produced) This was funded by the Higher Education Academy for Health Sciences and Practice. It was sponsored by the University of Northampton (2006-2007)
  • Member of writing group since 2007
