Definition of e-Learning

e-Learning is defined as: … 'the use of technologies in learning opportunities'.

This is a very broad definition but has been used in the context of the HEFCE e-Learning Strategy:

Context: 'The Government e-learning strategy defines e-learning as any learning that uses ICT. In embedding this strategy we want to ensure that there is confident use of the full range of pedagogic opportunities provided by ICT. For HE this will encompass flexible learning as well as distance learning, and the use of ICT as a communications and delivery tool between individuals and groups, to support students and improve the management of learning'. (HEFCE e-learning Strategy March 2005 p.5.)

In view of the breadth of this definition, there is a subdivision of forms of e-learning by stage:

Stages of E-learning

A. Informative Stage

This stage covers the provision of information (administrative), programme specification, module handbooks, timetables, reading lists, exam questions and links to external resources.

B. Integrative Stage

This stage covers more dynamic interaction and communication replacing some face-to-face activity, including manipulation of online datasets, group discussion, video lectures, e-tutoring, online exercises, formative and summative assessment.

C. Transformatory Stage

This stage provides an online learning community, using resources and technologies in innovative and collaborative ways, such as multimedia simulations, online seminars with invited experts.
