Northampton Institute for Urban Affairs

Aims

The aims of the Northampton Institute for Urban Affairs (NIUA) are to:

Establish a Research, Consultancy and Knowledge Exchange centre of excellence in 'Urban and Regional development, Regeneration and Sustainability'

Develop a Learning, Teaching and Professional Development strategy on Urban Development and Community sustainability

Establish a Community and Employer engagement partnership and agreement, part of a wider University strategy to develop the University as the "Most Embedded University" in the UK

The Institute was set up in response to the Government's growth agenda for South East England.

Northamptonshire is part of Milton Keynes South Midlands (MKSM), which is one of the largest growth areas in the U.K., with thousands of new jobs and homes planned up to 2031.

The growth (and its impact on existing towns and communities) creates a major challenge for economic, environment and social sustainability.

The NIUA aims to develop a capacity to research, engage with, and critically analyse the development of the region, and wider issues of sustainable development in the UK and elsewhere.

Who we are

The Northampton Institute of Urban Affairs is a multi-disciplinary, cross-University Institute, based within the School of Social Sciences at the University of Northampton (Park Campus).

Within the University, the NIUA can call upon expertise in Urban and Regional Policy, Environmental Sustainable Development, Social Enterprise, Community Cohesion, and Health and Crime Prevention.

The NIUA works closely with public, private and community partners in Northamptonshire and beyond.

Established in 2008, the N.I.U.A  incorporates two affiliate centres:
