Political Study at Northampton

At the dawn of a second millennium, the pace of integration among the world's regions and populations is breathtaking. Powerful forces - the emergence of transnational economies, the lightening speed of global communications, and the movement of peoples, cultures and ideas into new settings - are reshaping notions of citizenship, society and community. At the same time, however, older religious hatreds, sectarian violence and new fundamentalisms are recasting existing states and disintegrating individual, national and international notions of security. Such dynamics demand that we rethink why we are where we are while reconsidering our understanding of the 'political' within and among the worlds peoples. Studying Politics at The University of Northampton is designed to foster in students a set of intellectual skills to enable more informed and effective participation in this 'ever-shrinking' and 'ever-changing' global context. The Joint Honours programme at UN allows you to take Politics as your Major (or Minor) subject or as one half of a Joint programme (for example, 'Politics and Sociology').

As a Politics student at UN you are first introduced to the essential skills we consider necessary for an understanding of our subject. From here you are offered a considerable range of specialist modules giving you the chance of pursuing your own particular interests and 'tailor-making' your degree. As a Joint Honours politics student you are enabled to broaden your studies and combine your interest in Politics with a range of other complementary subjects. Sociology, Psychology, Criminology, History, Geography and Business Studies are just some of the subjects that you can take alongside politics at The University of Northampton. We are proud to report that the majority of recent students gained excellent upper second class degrees. This was a real achievement by all concerned. This success also reflects a real commitment by The University of Northampton's politics staff to help you achieve your true potential and maximize the learning experience.
