School Research
Northampton Institute for Urban Affairs
The School is noted for its research excellence. We have two international centres for research – the Centre for the Study of Anomalous Psychological Processes (CSAPP) and the Centre for Children and Youth (CCY).Another centre is planned looking at contemporary issues of Equality and Diversity.
There are a number of research clusters in the School, notably in History (social history), Psychology (parapsychology and critical psychology), youth and children, international relations including terrorism, international security and international law, race equality and diversity, and American studies.
History gained a 4 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise and together with Psychology, the School is investing in key staff to support the research that will be assessed for RAE 2008. Two professorial level staff appointments have been made in History and Psychology as well as a number of other staff in other subject areas.
Research is taken forward at many levels in the School. Specifically we see research as:
- Underpinning the taught curriculum to benefit the students
- Demonstrating our work at levels of national and international excellence
- As part of our determination to be excellent in learning and teaching by research into pedagogy.
The School has an excellent track record in obtaining recognition for its research both in terms of funds from outside bodies including the Leverhulme Trust, Wellcome Foundation, the Arts and Humanities Research Board (ARHB) and through media coverage where staff frequently present their research on national and regional TV and radio and in newspapers.
